Posing Tips for Beauty Portraits

For some, having a wide variety of poses can be challenging. The model is limited by what they are wearing, what they have to hold or interact with, or even the vision or mood of the shoot. Beauty headshots provide their own limitations, here are some posing tips for your next beauty shoot.

With headshots, your composition is a tighter focus on your subject, leaving them with less of their body they can use and work with when it comes to adding a variety of poses to your shoot. In this video from photographer Kayleigh June, she goes through and shares 10 different tips that can help your next beauty portrait. Throughout the video, model Yao Yao is also demonstrating different poses and how she just flows into them.

Two of the tips cover hands, which I feel can play an important part in adding diversity to the shots but also can make be tricky at times. Depending on your model, the color of their palms can be drastically different from the rest of their skin, which presents some retouching challenges. I would also like to add if you plan on using hands in the shot to discuss with the subject prior to the shoot so they can make sure their hands and nails are well taken care of and prepped for the shoot. You can always keep clear nail polish on hand with nail polish remover in case you need it, which can save you time in retouching later.

Which tip do you think is the best single piece of advice from the video? What are some other posing tips that you use for your beauty headshots? Let us know in the comments below.
